Alias Systems has recently launched a version of Maya called Personal Learning Edition. This version is available for download at no cost at the Alias Systems web site. Maya is not an industry standard, but is certainly a well respected modeller in it’s own right, and a free, powerful modeller is nothing to sneeze at.
